Spain: A Top Choice for American Retirees' Ideal Retirement Life

A latest study released by the Global Intelligence Unit (GIU) shows that Spain has been rated as the most ideal retirement country for American retirees, surpassing traditional popular destinations such as Portugal, Costa Rica, and France. The evaluation criteria cover multiple dimensions, including the cost of living, medical standards, safety, tax policies, climate conditions, and the possibility of obtaining a second nationality.

Spain received a full score of 100 in this assessment, especially excelling in terms of the quality of life and the medical system. It ranks fifth globally in terms of climate and second in terms of the medical system. The flight distance from the United States is also quite moderate. In terms of safety, although there are occasional petty thefts in big cities like Madrid and Barcelona, the overall crime rate remains low.

The study specifically points out that Madrid is one of the most popular cities for expatriates to settle in. The average monthly expenditure for living here is between $2,000 and $2,500. The rent for a one-bedroom apartment is approximately €1,200 in the city center and a bit cheaper, around €900, in the suburbs.

In addition, American retirees can apply for a "non-profit visa." As long as they meet certain income and savings requirements, they can legally reside in Spain without the need to work. Although Spain recently abolished the "Golden Visa," which no longer allows foreigners to obtain residency quickly by purchasing property, this has not affected its status as a retirement paradise.

Globally, Spain still tops the list and has become the ideal residence in the hearts of many American retirees.
